| Resumo | According to the UN program for the environment the phenomenon of desertification is responsible for the yearly loss of about 6 million hectares of productive land, affecting directly or indirectly millions of people all around the world. The desertification regions consist of areas where the soil and vegetal cover degradation effects have reached irreversible level. From studies produced by the Ministry of Environment, considering the activities of the National Conference and Latin American Desertification Seminar (CONSLAD) in the 90s, and also by the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), four Desertification Nucleus were identified and named as follows: Gilbués (Piauí State), Irauçuba (Ceará State), Seridó (Rio Grande do Norte State) and Cabrobó (Pernambuco State). The municipality of Gilbués is affected by the soil degradation process due to strong erosion rate and intense sediment transportation by the drainage system, so that, the traditional regional land use becomes impracticable. On the other hand, this municipality presents high agricultural activity, mainly for Soya beans plantations. This work is a result of a use of a Geographical Data Base developed to IICA/DNOCS agreement and shows that the degradation effects obeys a process with a determined phases and the observation of satellite images of a period of thirty years shows that the degradation effects are restricted only to an area occupied by the shale of Areado Group, sedimentary unity of Sanfranciscana Basin. These observations allow a new configuration to Gilbués Desertification Nucleus. | |||
